Founding Story

The child with
whom it all started

Sometimes you meet someone who changes your life. I met Ombir for the first time in the summer of 2014. A very positive and happy boy with a lust for life. I asked him: “What would you like the most in the whole world?

“Love," he answered. I slumped to my knees, embraced his fragile body. In his bright eyes, I saw a child looking back at me. A golden smile on his face and beaming eyes.

At that moment, I saw the enormous power and the potential of giving as little as love to just one child. An 11-year-old boy’s greatest dream was something as simple as love. This answer changed his life.

Ombir was born in a very small village in the south of Nepal. He lived with his brother and parents in a hut made of bamboo. Ombir grew up in pure poverty. With only one meal a day, the chance of survival was small. Following the death of his father, Ombir’s sick mother brought him here.

Here, Ombir was provided with the vital things he needed. Shelter, food, education and love. Lots of love! But above all, a chance to build a better future.

“Be the change you wish
to see in the world.”

25 April 2015. The day that Nepal was hit by a devastating earthquake. As a result, the children lost their home and had to sleep for weeks in a tent on a nearby lawn. One thing was for sure. Somebody had to take a stand and take care of these children.

I had no papers, no experience, no money and I didn't speak the language. To me, this didn’t matter at all. Hearing the children crying on the phone and seeing the fear in their eyes while the tears were streaming down my cheeks, I knew for sure what I needed to do. This was the time for me to take a stand, quit my study in Psychology and my job and move to Nepal to take care of these children.

At the beginning of 2016, I set up my own foundation - the Ombir Foundation, named after the boy who inspired me so much - and I take care of these children here in Nepal 24/7.

These children have become my family. And if I’ve learnt one thing from them, then it’s that we have to take care of our family, wherever we may find them in the world. I have made it my life mission to take care of these children. With the greatest dream to build a new house, because every child deserves to grow up in a safe and loving environment.

In the summer of 2017, the construction of the new house for the children began. The rainy season immediately put a halt on continuing construction for a few months. Fortunately, this gave us some extra time to raise sufficient funds for the house.

After months of very hard work and having to overcome various setbacks, the house was finally ready at the end of 2018, just before Christmas. We all said goodbye to the stuffy upstairs flat in the apartment block where we had been living for the past couple of years.

Step by step, I walked with the children to our new house. The place they can call their home from now onwards. We didn’t have any possessions other than what we had in our school backpacks on our backs.

When we crossed the river barefoot on the outskirts of the village, I got goose bumps, and the tears begin to stream. The children also became emotional as we looked behind us again. You did it, Mick. You did it! We have our own house! Yes, dear ones, we have succeeded. This was such an amazing feeling.

Thank you for all the sweet words
and support in recent years.

Thank you for all the sweet words and support in recent years. Without you, we would never have been able to realize the dream of these children. Their own home.

Having achieved the children's greatest dream, their own home, several very eventful and emotional years came to an end. Who would ever have thought we would have our own house? Perhaps that’s the best part of it all. To show children that dreaming is possible, as long as you believe in yourself and are willing to do what is needed.

Self-confidence is a magic word here. Something that, in my opinion, is all too often missing from a lot of children. Give your child more confidence. Show that it may be as it is and it will shine. will wake up. Believe me. Let's get this sorted, okay? Please

Ever since I can remember, I have always deeply believed in the following: “I believe that if you do something out of a pure intention, for the purpose of helping others, the entire universe will conspire to help you.

Which is how you, dear reader, came across our path. Maybe you have been following us for years, maybe you’re even a sponsor - thank you - or maybe you’re reading our story today for the first time. It doesn’t matter.

In 2020 and the years to follow, we will focus our full attention on education and helping these children to achieve their dreams. And to do this, we need your help.

Become a LIFECHANGER of the Ombir Foundation and give these children the care they need every month, starting at €25 per month.

Together, we can create a new world for these children. A world where every child has the opportunity to grow up safely and receive love. A world in which these children can go to school every day, learn to believe in themselves and realize their dreams. And what a child learns, a child will pass on.

For as long as one of these children, with an outstretched hand, is asking for nothing more than love, my mission will continue!

Be the change you wish to see in the world.

Mick Bröcker
